RARE GLASS DISH FROM THE SS SHALOM OF THE ZIM LINES ISRAEL

RARE GLASS DISH FROM THE SS SHALOM OF THE ZIM LINES ISRAEL

This item is a decorative glass dish from the Zim Lines Israel shipping company and is from the vessel SS Shalom. It is an unusual item to find as pieces from this shipping line are not often seen for sale. It is a Smokey Brown colour dish and dates from the 1960’s and shows on it a superb picture of the vessel. The size of the dish is 8½" (21.5cm) x 4" (10cm). It is in a great condition and a nice souvenir.

ZIM was founded in 1945, by the Jewish Agency and the Histadrut (General Federation of Laborers in the Land of Israel). The first ship was purchased in partnership with Harris and Dixon (based in London) in 1947. This vessel was refurbished, renamed SS Kedmah, and sailed to Palestine in the summer of 1947. During her first years, her main task was transporting hundreds of thousands of immigrants to the emerging state. Some of the other ships that had been used for clandestine immigration before the establishment of Israel as a state were confiscated by the British mandate authorities and later joined the company's fleet. The company continued to purchase more ships, among them SS Negba, SS Artza and SS Galila.

During the 1948 war, the company was the sole maritime connection with the state of Israel, supplying food, freight and military equipment. In 1953, some of the money from the reparations agreement between Israel and West Germany was allocated to the purchase of 36 new ships, a massive expansion of ZIM's fleet.

The 1950s and 1960s saw ZIM concentrate on passenger ships, alongside a constant expansion of the cargo shipping business. Passenger liners were a common means of international transport before the emergence of cheap air transport, and pleasure cruises were also popular. ZIM sailed the Mediterranean Sea, as well as having regular routes to the United States. Some of its ships cruised to the Caribbean during the winter. 1964 saw the completion of the ocean liner SS Shalom, which turned out to be a failure, marking the end of the ZIM passenger shipping era.

Henry Grace à Dieu ("Henry Grace of God"), popularly known as the Great Harry, was an English carrack or "great ship" of the 16th century. Contemporary with Mary Rose, Henry Grace à Dieu was even larger. She had a large forecastle four decks high, and a stern castle two decks high. She was 165 feet (50 m) long, weighing 1,000–1,500 tons and having a complement of 700–1,000. It is said that she was ordered by Henry VIII in response to the Scottish ship Michael, launched in 1511.

She was originally built at Woolwich Dockyard from 1512 to 1514 and was one of the first vessels to feature gunports and had twenty of the new heavy bronze cannon, allowing for a broadside. In all she mounted 43 heavy guns and 141 light guns. She was the first English two-decker and when launched she was the largest and most powerful warship in Europe.
