COMMEMORATIVE ASHTRAY AND BOOK FROM THE SS GREAT BRITAIN

COMMEMORATIVE ASHTRAY AND BOOK FROM THE SS GREAT BRITAIN

This is a fantastic pair of items connected to one of the most famous ships to be launched in English waters. It is a souvenir ashtray and commemorative book from the grand old vessel The SS Great Britain. The size of the ashtray is 5" x 3½" (13cm x 9cm) and both items are in a great condition £2

SS Great Britain was an advanced passenger steamship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Great Western Steamship Company's transatlantic service between Bristol and New York. While other ships had previously been built of iron or equipped with a screw propeller, Great Britain was the first to combine these features in a large ocean-going ship.

When launched in 1843, Great Britain was by far the largest vessel afloat. However, her protracted construction and high cost had left her owners in a difficult financial position, and they were forced out of business in 1846 after the ship was stranded by a navigational error.

Sold for salvage and repaired, Great Britain carried thousands of immigrants to Australia until converted to sail in 1881. Three years later, the vessel was retired to the Falkland Islands where she was utilised as a warehouse, quarantine ship and coal hulk until scuttled in 1937.

In 1970, Great Britain was returned to the Bristol dry dock where she was first built. Now listed as part of the National Historic Fleet, Core Collection, the vessel is an award-winning visitor attraction and museum ship in Bristol Harbour, with between 150,000–170,000 visitors annually.

EARLY SOUVENIR DISH FROM SHIPPING COMPANY ‘ROTTERDAM LLOYD'

EARLY SOUVENIR DISH FROM SHIPPING COMPANY ‘ROTTERDAM LLOYD'

This item is difficult to date but is believed to be very old and around the 1930’s. It is a small dish from the shipping company Rotterdam Lloyd which is marked in the centre with the company logo. The size of the dish is 4" (10cm) and it is in a good condition.

The company started life in 1839 as Willem Ruys with sailing ships to trade mostly to the Dutch East Indies and the Far East. Some voyages to South America were also made. In 1870 a steamer service was instituted to carry iron ore between Spain, the Mediterranean and Holland and a passenger / mail service to Batavia (Jakarta) commenced in 1872. The Stoomboot Reederij "Rotterdamsche Lloyd" (Rotterdam Lloyd) was formed in 1875.

In 1881 the name was changed to Stoomvaart Maatschappij Rotterdamsche Lloyd (Rotterdam Steam Navigation Co) and in 1883 the company was re-formed as N.V. Rotterdamsche Lloyd. A subsidiary company was Stoomvaart Maatschappij 'Triton' (1899) to operate the company's tramp ship trade. Partnership operations were formed in 1902 with other companies to operate the Java - China - Japan Line, in 1906 to operate the Java - Bengalen Line and in 1908 the Java - Australia Line. In 1908 Rotterdam Lloyd also set up the Stoomvaart Maatschappij "Rotterdam" as a tramp ship company. A new Java - Pacific Line was founded in partnership in 1915.

A consortium of Dutch shipowners formed Vereenigde Nederlandsche Scheepvaarts Maatschappij (United Netherlands Navigation Co) in 1920 to divide the routes between owners and Rotterdam Lloyd were appointed managers of the Holland - Australia Line and three ships allocated to this service. After the war, the company was granted the honour of Koninklijke (Royal) to add to its title and became Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd. In 1948 Rotterdam Lloyd and Nederland S.S. Co. formed the Nedlloyd Line to operate services from the Gulf of Mexico to the Persian Gulf, India and Pakistan. With the independence of Indonesia in 1949 trade with this area gradually declined and the later advent of popular air travel, spelt the end of passenger ships. In 1970 Rotterdam Lloyd merged with other companies to form Koninklijke Nedlloyd N.V. and disappeared as a separate entity.

A SET OF 3 SUPERB DISH SOUVENIRS FROM THE VESSEL VISTAFJORD

A SET OF 3 SUPERB DISH SOUVENIRS FROM THE VESSEL VISTAFJORD

This item is a set of 3 decorative dish souvenirs from the Norwegian Lines vessel Vistafjord. As shown in the picture they are produced in colour and are in a great condition. Each one shows the voyage route taken of the vessel and the date of the voyage. The items are approx. 4" (10cm) wide and date from the 1980’s being very collectable. £9

This wonderful 24,292grt ship debuted for the Norwegian America Line in 1974, being the younger sister to the slightly smaller Sagafjord which had been sailing 9 years by then. In 1980 both ships were passed to Norwegian American Cruises, with NAL owning the majority shareholding. 3 years later they were inherited by Cunard after the then owners, Trafalgar House, bought Norwegian American Cruises.

Cunard retained their original names and livery apart from the funnels which were changed to Cunard colours. Cunard was bought by Carnival Cruise Line of the US in 1998 resulting in Vistafjord being renamed Caronia while there was no room in the fleet for her sister. With the impending arrival of the Mega liner, Queen Mary 2, Caronia was subsequently sold to Saga and joined her sister, her final cruise in October 2003 and debuting on the 7th February 2004 in Southampton.

On 8 January 2009 the ship was sold for scrap, and she was beached at Alang, India on 26 February 2009.

Although never used as such, the ship was originally planned as a dual ocean liner/cruise ship, for service between Hamburg and New York as well as cruising. She was the first major passenger liner built in Germany since 1938. On entering service for the Black Sea Shipping Company, she became the first four-star cruise ship operated under the Soviet flag.

A SOUVENIR PLATE FROM THE FRED OLSEN LINE VESSEL ‘BOUDICCA’

A SOUVENIR PLATE FROM THE FRED OLSEN LINE VESSEL ‘BOUDICCA’

Although this item is not very old in terms of age, items from this shipping line generally are very collectable. It is a souvenir plate from the Fred Olsen Cruise Lines vessel ‘Boudicca’ and dates from 2009. The plate is a limited edition piece number 900 and is 8" (20cms) wide. It is in its original box and is as new.

The company was founded by Petter Olsen (1821-1899) in 1848 and, by his death, the company had 16 ships with offices in Hvitsten. Petter's son Thomas Fredrik "Fred" Olsen (1857-1933) or Fred. Olsen, whom the company is named after, took the company from a small business with a few boats into a powerful multinational shipping and ship building business. He had a vision of providing high quality service on a network of lines, at first domestically and, afterwards, internationally.

To do this required steam ships, of which the first was acquired in 1897. By 1914 the first motor ship was put in use on the South America line. During World War I 23 of the companies 44 ships sank.
