LARGE SIZE DINING PLATE FROM THE P&O VESSEL THE SS CANBERRA

LARGE SIZE DINING PLATE FROM THE P&O VESSEL THE SS CANBERRA

This item is a large size dining plate from the famous old P&O vessel SS Canberra. It is in a great condition and original from the 1960’s. It is an as used on board item and made in the traditional blue mosaic pattern associated with the Canberra. The large size dining plate is approx. 9½" (24cm) wide and is one of the last remaining peices from our Canberra dining collection. Items like this from The Canberra are now very hard to locate.

SS Canberra was an ocean liner, which later operated on cruises, in the P&O fleet from 1961 to 1997. She was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland at a cost of UK £17 million, and was launched on 16 March 1960. The ship was named on 17 March 1958, after the federal capital of Australia, Canberra, and entered service in May 1961. During the 1982 Falklands War, it served as a troop ship.

P&O commissioned the Canberra to operate the combined P&O-Orient Line service between the United Kingdom and Australia. The arrival of the jet airliner had already caused a drop in demand for this service; a reduction in emigration to Australia and wars forcing the closure of the Suez Canal saw the route become unprofitable. However a refit in 1974 saw the Canberra adapted to cruising.

Unusually, this transition from an early life as a purpose built ocean liner to a long and successful career in cruising, occurred without any major external alterations, and with only minimal internal and mechanical changes over the years.

AN EARLY STYLE ASHTRAY FROM THE P&O VESSEL THE ORIANA

AN EARLY STYLE ASHTRAY FROM THE P&O VESSEL THE ORIANA

This is an item from the P&O Lines vessel The Oriana. It is an early style ashtray from the vessel which was produced as a souvenir item. The size of the ashtray is 5"(13cm) wide, is in a very good condition and is believed to date from the 1960’s. £5

The first Oriana was built in 1960 by Vickers-Armstrong's, Barrow. Ordered by, and registered to the Orient Steam Navigation Co, she was delivered to P&O Orient Lines with the distinctive Orient Line corn-coloured hull. She served on the route to Australia from Southampton (unlike earlier Orient Liners which sailed from London). In 1962 she collided with the carrier USS Kearsarge between San Francisco and Los Angeles in fog. Her hull was repainted white in 1965, when she was transferred to full P&O registry.

As time past, she spent more and more time cruising, so that during the late 70s she cruised from Southampton in the summer, and Sydney in the winter, with positioning trips in each direction via the Panama Canal. Her final Southampton season was 1981, after which she stayed in Australia until sold for stationary use in Japan in 1986.

Oriana was sold in 2001 to China, where she was bought by the Hangzhou Songcheng Group, a company in east China's ZheJiang Province, who invested nearly 300 million yuan (375,000 US dollars) to purchase and refit her. The refurbished ship was berthed at Dalian Xinghai Bay a year later, and opened to public on July 18th 2002. The intention was that she would be permanently berthed at Xinghai Bay in Dalian as a unique deluxe liner theme park. As a theme park, visitors were able to view the ship's original bridge, VIP hall, post office, hospital and museums and enjoy films and artistic performances there. Oriana caught fire just after her opening to the public but the damage was slight.

AN OLD MID 1800’s HANDBOOK OF INFORMATION FROM THE P&O LINE

AN OLD MID 1800’s HANDBOOK OF INFORMATION FROM THE P&O LINE

Here we have a very old handbook of information from the P&O Line. It is from the 1800’s around 1885 and shows information on the fleets vessels and routes of passage. Although the item is in a fair condition and not excellent, it is important to remember how old it is and quite frankly you would be unlikely to find another like it.

In 1822, Brodie McGhie Willcox, a London ship broker, and Arthur Anderson, a sailor from the Shetland Isles, northern Scotland, went into partnership to operate a shipping line, primarily operating routes between England and Spain and Portugal. In 1835, Dublin shipowner Captain Richard Bourne joined the business, and the three men started a regular steamer service between London and Spain and Portugal - the Iberian Peninsula - using the name Peninsular Steam Navigation Company, with services to Vigo, Oporto, Lisbon and Cádiz. The company flag colours are directly connected with the Peninsular flags: the white and blue represent the Portuguese flag in 1837, and the yellow and red the Spanish flag.

UNUSED PHOTO ALBUM FROM PRINCESS LINES VESSEL GRAND PRINCESS

UNUSED PHOTO ALBUM FROM PRINCESS LINES VESSEL GRAND PRINCESS

This item is unused and as new. It is a photo album from the fantastic cruise ship the Grand Princess from the Princess Lines Shipping Company. It is unused and in a presentation box ant the size of the item is 13½" (34cm) square. Although not of ancient or old value, to purchase this album from onboard what cost alot more money than for sale here.

At 109,000 tons The Grand Princess is too wide to fit through the Panama Canal but her size allows her to offer passengers an unmatched number of outside cabins with balconies.

Grand Princess is a Grand-class cruise ship owned by Princess Cruises. Built in 1998 by Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani in Monfalcone (Hull Number 5956), Italy, at a cost of approximately US$450 million, she was the largest and most expensive passenger ship ever built at the time. Grand Princess primarily operates in Europe during the summer to early Autumn, and then operates in the Caribbean during winter to late spring.

Grand Princess was the first of the Grand-class ships, and has a different decor scheme to her sister ships, using darker woods, and the interior decor is more similar to the smaller Sun-class ships. The cabin layout is also marginally different in the arrangement of the bathroom and the walk-in wardrobe. At a recent refit, the Movies under the Stars feature was added.
