DESCRIPTION -- Superb half-moon dish from the British & Commonwealth shipping Line which is an as used onboard ship item and is bottom marked Ashworth Bros and the size is 8" (21.5) long.

HISTORY -- The Company was originally established in 1955 when the Clan Line Steamers company was merged with Union Castle to form The British & Commonwealth Shipping Company, a shipping business. British & Commonwealth were the ultimate owners of British United Airways (BUA), Britain's largest wholly private, independent airline of the 1960s, as well as its subsidiaries and sister companies, including British United Air Ferries and British United Island Airways (BUIA). In 1969 British and Commonwealth Shipping, Furness Withy, P&O and The Ocean Steamship Company established Overseas Containers Limited to exploit containerisation.

DESCRIPTION -- Cup and saucer from the Russian vessel the SS Maxim Gorki which is in a great condition and a rare find with the items showing on them the traditional design logo of the Maxim Gorki company (click on the picture for a close up view of the logo).

HISTORY -- The SS Maxim Gorki was a cruise ship that was, until 30 November 2008, owned by Sovcomflot, Russia, under long-term charter to Phoenix Reisen, Germany. She was built in 1969 by Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, West Germany for the German Atlantic Line as SS Hamburg. In 1973 she was renamed SS Hanseatic. The following year she was sold to the Black Sea Shipping Company, Soviet Union and received the name Maxim Gorki in honour of the poet Maxim Gorki. On 20 August 2008 the Maxim Gorki was sold to Orient Lines.

DESCRIPTION -- Superb rare to find ships soup bowl from the old Coast Line Shipping Company which is nicely top marked with the company logo C.L., and is in an excellent condition. It is made from Real Ironstone China and has the makers mark, Ashworth Brothers, on the back and the size of this plate is 9" (24cm) wide (to see a close up of the plate's logo click on the picture).

CONDITION -- Excellent
HISTORY -- The Coast Lines Ltd of Liverpool was formed by the merging of three lines in 1913 and until 1917 was known by their joint names, Powell, Bacon and Hough. The name of Coast Lines Limited was adopted in 1917, when the company was absorbed into the Royal Mail Group (q.v.). After the dissolution of the group in 1931, the company became independent under the chairmanship of Sir Alfred Read (1871-1955), who had previously been a director. From 1917 to 1951 Coast Lines acquired a controlling interest in a large number of coastal shipping companies, eventually numbering about twenty.

DESCRIPTION -- From the Chandris Line this is a ships dining plate which is in a very good condition and the size is 9" (24cm) wide.

CONDITION -- Very Good
HISTORY -- The Chandris Line was founded by John D. Chandris, from the island of Chios, who bought his first vessel, the sailing ship Dimitrios in 1915. After the First World War, he purchased his three first steamers, Dimitrios II, Vlassios and Eugenia, trading around the Greek islands. Chandris Line entered passenger shipping in 1922 with the steamer Chimara, which ran a coastal service between Piraeus and Corinth.
