VERY RARE SILVER PLATED ASHTRAY FROM THE RMS DORIC CIRCA 1930's

DESCRIPTION -- Very rare and difficult to find silver-plated ashtray from the White Star Line ship the RMS Doric. It is dated circa 1930's and shows the company Houseflag & Crest in the centre and the size is 4" (11.5cm) Square (click on the picture to see a close up of the crest/houseflag).

CONDITION -- Good

HISTORY -- The RMS Doric was a British ocean liner operated by White Star Line. The RMS Doric was White Star's second and last turbine-propelled ship. The vessel was constructed by Harland and Wolff in Belfast and was launched in 1922. Her passenger capacity was 600 in cabin class plus 1,700 3rd. class, with a crew of 350. The ship's maiden voyage on 8 June 1923, was from Liverpool to Montreal, Canada. She served on this route until 1932. From 1933 Doric was used for only cruising, being based at Liverpool until 1934 when she was one of ten White Star liners transferred to the newly merged company Cunard White-Star Ltd.

P&O FLAG BELIEVED TO BE FROM THE FALKLANDS WAR AND THE SS CANBERRA

DESCRIPTION -- This particular flag is from the old P&O vessel the SS Canberra and was used during the Falklands War in 1982. It is an old full size P&O Houseflag and is ex stock from the store of the Canberra. It was reputedly used on the return from Falklands War and flown on the Canberra. The size of the flag is 11ft x 7ft (335cm x 213cm ). It has some slight damage with regard to a few holes but otherwise is a nice piece and a genuine item.

CONDITION -- Good

HISTORY -- The SS Canberra was an ocean liner, which later operated on cruises, in the P&O fleet from 1961 to 1997. She was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland at a cost of 17,000,000. The ship was named on 17 March 1958, after the federal capital of Australia, Canberra. She was launched on 16 March 1960, sponsored by Dame Pattie Menzies, GBE, wife of the then Prime Minister of Australia, Robert Menzies. She entered service in May 1961, and took her maiden voyage starting in June. During the 1982 Falklands War, she served as a troop ship.
