DESCRIPTION -- Set of 5 very early large size brass coloured coat buttons from the United States Navy which are dated circa 1960's and are original from the period showing on them the bare eagle.

HISTORY -- The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The U.S. Navy is the largest in the world; its battle fleet tonnage is greater than that of the next 13 largest navies combined. The U.S. Navy also has the world's largest carrier fleet, with 11 in service, one under construction (two planned), and one in reserve. The service had 328,516 personnel on active duty and 101,689 in the Navy Reserve in January 2011. It operates 286 ships in active service and more than 3,700 aircraft.

HISTORY -- The Merchant Navy has been in existence for a significant period in British history, owing much of its growth to British imperial expansion. As an entity in itself it can be dated back to the 17th century, where an attempt was made to register all seamen as a source of manpower for the Royal Navy during times of conflict. However that registration of merchant seamen failed, and it was not successfully implemented until 1835.

The predominant colours of Royal Navy uniforms are navy blue and white. Since reforms in 1997, all ratings, regardless of gender, have worn the same ceremonial uniform. Royal Naval officers coat buttons have always tended to be very collectable.

CONDITION -- Good
HISTORY -- Of all the cruise lines in the market of today, perhaps the most venerable would be the Cunard Line. A name that is synonymous with transatlantic crossing, the Cunard Cruise Ship Line is known in some capacity to just about everybody who knows anything about ships. The famous old brand is of course most famous for its White Star Line ships of the early part of the last century, and in particular the tragic and ill-fated liner Titanic, which even those who care nothing for travel of any sort know at least something about.

CONDITION -- Very Good
HISTORY -- Founded in the 1866 as Alfred Booth & Company to operate services to Northern Brazil and the Amazon. In 1881 the Booth Steamship Co. was formed. In 1901 the Booth and Singlehurst's Red Cross Line were amalgamated into a single company and named Booth Steamship Co. (1901), Ltd. At the same time, to tidy up the tug and barge operations on the River Amazon, Booth & Co. was formed and these small units transferred to this company. In 1911 the Iquitos SS Co. and it's fleet was absorbed by Booth SS Co. In 1946 the Booth Line was sold to the Vestey Group of companies.

CONDITION -- Good
HISTORY -- The Union Company, Union Steam Ship Company (USS Co), or Union Line was started in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1875, when it was floated by James Mills, who had been clerk to Johnny Jones and his Harbour Steam Company. The Union Company was sold to the P&O Line in 1917. James Mills, who was born in Wellington, was knighted in 1907 and K.C.M.G. in 1909. He was a UK resident from 1907, and died in London. By 1990, the company operated 7 ships, and was involved in ship management, tourism, real estate and other ventures. By 2000, the Union Bulk barge made its last voyage.

HISTORY -- The New Zealand Steamship Company or otherwise known as the Union Steam Ship Company survived as New Zealand's premier shipping company for 125 years, from 1875-2000. Many famous U.S.S.Co. liners and cargo ships plied the ocean routes to ports in eastern North America, the Far East, Australia, Pacific islands and of course, around the coast of New Zealand. A vital trade route was Cook Strait which linked the North Island with the South Island.

CONDITION -- Very Good
HISTORY -- The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company was a British shipping company founded in London in 1839 by Scot James Macqueen. After good and bad times it became the largest shipping group in the world in 1927 when it took over the White Star Line. The company ran into financial trouble, and the British government investigated its affairs in 1930, resulting in the Royal Mail Case. Chairman Lord Kylsant was imprisoned in 1931 for misrepresenting the state of the company to shareholders.
