It was responsible for services between the UK and the Caribbean and Central America and North America. The company was purchased by the White Star Line in 1927. In 1932, it changed its name to the Royal Mail Line and re-organisation after scandal and losses. In 1965 the RML was purchased by the Furness, Withy & Co.

In 1938 Royal Mail again bought PSNC, but the two organisations were kept separate.

HISTORY -- Royal Mail Lines (RML) was created in 1932 and took over the ships of Royal Mail Steam Packet Company and other companies of the former group. The Royal Mail Line was taken over in 1965 by Furness, Withy & Company and ships often interchanged between the Royal Mail Line, Furness and Shaw Savill & Albion Lines fleets. By 1972 Royal Mail had virtually disappeared as a separate shipping line.

DESCRIPTION -- Superb item which is a cup & saucer from the Royal Mail Lines. Produced in the distinctive bird of paradise design, the item is in an excellent condition and an as used in service piece. The item is bottom marked and original from the 1950’s.

HISTORY -- Formerly known as the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company it received the mail contract for the West Indies and commenced operating in 1841. A West Indies inter-island service was also operated. In 1850 services expanded to South America. A joint service with Holland America Line to the Pacific coast of North America started in 1921. In 1932 the giant Kylsant Shipping empire collapsed and the chairman Lord Kylsant was jailed for issuing a false prospectus. Royal Mail Steam Packet Company went into liquidation, Royal Mail Lines Limited was formed and took over the assets of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, the Nelson Line and David MacIver & Company.

DESCRIPTION -- This item is now well over 100 years old and is a letter written on 17th September 1903 onboard the old Royal Mail Line vessel the Orizaba. It is in a fair condition, but a little water stained and a rare find.

CONDITION -- Fair
HISTORY -- The RMS Orizaba was a Royal Mail Line vessel and sadly shipwrecked off Rockingham, Western Australia on 16 February 1905. On her approach to Fremantle, a smog of bushfire smoke was obscuring the coast and the captain lost his bearings. The ship went aground in 6.1 metres (20ft) of water on Five Fathom Bank, west of Garden Island. All 160 people on board were evacuated safely. It is one of the largest ships ever to be wrecked in Australian waters.

HISTORY -- The SS Demerara was a British steamship built by Harland and Wolff at Belfast, Northern Ireland and was launched on December 21, 1911. She was owned by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, London, England and was 500 feet long, of 11,484 tons with a speed of 13.5 knots. She was a refrigerated meat carrier with accommodation for 933 passengers. She was equipped with wireless. SS Demerara was named after the river in British Guiana.
