HISTORY -- The Holland Steamship Company (Dutch: Hollandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij (HSM)) was formed in Amsterdam in 1885 to run a steamship service from Amsterdam to London. Outside of its passenger / cargo services, Holland Steamship Company operated cargo services to many ports around the coasts of the U.K. and Ireland - see 'Routes' above. Passengers would occasionally be carried on these vessels but it was on an ad hoc basis. A feature of the ships deployed on the London service was the mounting of deck cranes to facilitate speedy cargo handling.

DESCRIPTION -- Piece of original salvage from the wreck of the vessel the SS Broadmayne which was sunk off the New Foundland Point many years ago. It is an ex museum piece which has been sealed to preserve the condition. The item is nicely mounted on a wooden presentation backing, and it also has a plaque with full description details and is dated circa 1900.
[ONLY 1 AVAILABLE]
CONDITION -- Good
HISTORY -- The demise of the SS Broadmayne took place within view of bystanders in the St. Petrox church area. She was a 3,120 ton oil tanker en route from London to Newport, but happily there was no serious oil spillage and no loss of life. It was in the early hours of New Years day in 1921 that thick fog totally obscured the coastline and this coupled with atrocious weather resulted in the downfall of the SS Broadmayne when she went aground off Wash Point. Due to the South West gale the Brixham lifeboat, the Betsy Newbon, whilst aware of the wrecking, was unable to launch for some hours.
