DESCRIPTION -- Officers coat buttons from the New Zealand Steamship Company and are a collection of large size mixed coloured buttons and are dated circa 1940's being original from the period (click on the picture for a close up view).

CONDITION -- Very Good

HISTORY -- The New Zealand Steamship Company or otherwise known as the Union Steam Ship Company survived as New Zealand's premier shipping company for 125 years, from 1875-2000. Many famous U.S.S.Co. liners and cargo ships plied the ocean routes to ports in eastern North America, the Far East, Australia, Pacific islands and of course, around the coast of New Zealand. A vital trade route was Cook Strait which linked the North Island with the South Island.

CONDITION -- Very Good

HISTORY -- The Merchant Navy is the maritime register of the United Kingdom, and describes the seagoing commercial interests of UK-registered ships and their crews. Merchant Navy vessels fly the Red Ensign, and are regulated by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).  The Merchant Navy has been in existence for a significant period in British history, owing much of its growth to British imperial expansion. As an entity in itself it can be dated back to the 17th century, where an attempt was made to register all seamen as a source of manpower for the Royal Navy during times of conflict.
