MARITIME PHOTOGRAPH SELECTION
MOSTLY RARE, OLD AND UNUSUAL TYPES
DESCRIPTION -- Early B/W postcard of the old Cunard Line vessel the RMS Queen Mary and the postcard is taken from our collection of over 2000 shipping postcards and is dated as being taken in the early 1960's.

CONDITION -- Excellent
HISTORY -- The RMS Queen Mary is a retired British ocean liner that sailed primarily on the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 for the Cunard-White Star Line and built by John Brown & Company in Clydebank, Scotland. Queen Mary, along with RMS Queen Elizabeth, were built as part of Cunard's planned two-ship weekly express service between Southampton, Cherbourg and New York. The two ships were a British response to the express superliners built by German, Italian and French companies in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

CONDITION -- Excellent
HISTORY -- The Berengaria was Cunard's first Queen vessel named after Queen Berengaria, the Queen Consort of Richard the Lionheart. Berengaria started her career as the pride of Hamburg-Amerika line. Her original name was Imperator and she was built by the Vulcan Werft Shipyard in Hamburg.

DESCRIPTION -- B/W postcard from the Canadian Pacific Line vessel the Melita which is unused and in a very good condition.

CONDITION -- Very Good
HISTORY -- The Canadian Pacific Line was a large Canadian shipping company established in the 19th century. From the late 1880s until after World War II, the company was Canada's largest operator of Atlantic and Pacific steamships. Many immigrants travelled on CP ships from Europe to Canada. The sinking of the steamship RMS Empress of Ireland just before World War I was the largest maritime disaster in Canadian history. The company provided Canadian Merchant Navy vessels in World Wars I and II.

CONDITION -- Very Good
HISTORY -- The first RMS Saxonia was a passenger ship of the British Cunard Line. Between 1900 and 1925, Saxonia operated on North Atlantic and Mediterranean passenger routes, and she saw military service during World War I (1914 - 1918). In 1925, the ageing and outdated Saxonia was sold to the Hendrik Ido Ambacht company in the Netherlands for scrapping. Her scrapping was completed before the end of the year.

DESCRIPTION -- B/W postcard from the Ben Line of the vessel Benstac which is unused and in a very good condition.

CONDITION -- Very Good
HISTORY -- The Ben Line Group was a family owned company with its origin in the shipping company, A & W Thomson, set up by brothers Alexander and William Thomson in Leith, near Edinburgh, in 1825. Following the departure of Alexander from the partnership, the company was renamed WM Thomson & Co in 1847.

DESCRIPTION -- Unused mint condition colour postcard from the old Cunard Line vessel the Carinthia which is original and an early example.

CONDITION -- Excellent
HISTORY -- RMS Carinthia was an ocean liner built in 1956 as one of the four Saxonia class ships. She sailed for Cunard Line from her completion until 1968 when she was sold to Sitmar Line, rebuilt into a full-time cruise ship and renamed SS Fairsea. She sailed with Sitmar until 1988, when Sitmar was sold to P&O. She was renamed SS Fair Princess and sailed for Princess Cruises and P&O Cruises until 2000. She was then sold to China Sea Cruises and renamed SS China Sea Discovery. In 2005 or 2006 she was scrapped in Alang, India.

DESCRIPTION -- From the Blue Funnel Line this is an early colour postcard from the Bibby Line vessel the Ascanius which is in a very good condition and is unused.

CONDITION -- Very Good
HISTORY -- The Blue Funnel Line was formed by the visionary Alfred Holt, who saw the steamship as a better and more economical way of shipping cargo and passengers to the Far East, China and later Australia. Alfred Holt commenced ship-owning with Thomas Ainsworth in 1852, and they built their first new ship in 1854, which they immediately chartered to the French Government for use in the Crimean War. In 1864, they began sailing to China and the Far East, and have since become the major British company serving this area.
