DESCRIPTION -- One of the most famous of P&O vessels is the SS Canberra and this item is a book covering the memories of the grand old vessel and containing many pictures and stories and contains over 40 pages. Also included is a Canberra on-board Pocket Guide and both items are in a fantastic condition.

HISTORY -- The SS Canberra was an ocean liner, which later operated on cruises, in the P&O fleet from 1961 to 1997. She was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland at a cost of 17,000,000. The ship was named on 17 March 1958, after the federal capital of Australia, Canberra. She was launched on 16 March 1960, sponsored by Dame Pattie Menzies, GBE, wife of the then Prime Minister of Australia, Robert Menzies. She entered service in May 1961, and took her maiden voyage starting in June. During the 1982 Falklands War, she served as a troop ship.

MARITIME PHOTOGRAPH SELECTION

DESCRIPTION -- Fantastic colour picture celebrating the maiden voyage of the Oriana and produced in April 1995, it is from a painting by Harley Crossley and is as new, with the size being 8" x 6" (21.5cm x 15cm).

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- When she was built in 1995, Oriana was the first new ship commissioned for P&O Cruises, and the first to be designed specifically for the British cruise market. She is the longest serving ship in the fleet, having been in continuous service with the company since she was launched. She is the second ship to carry the name Oriana, and is named in tribute to the SS Oriana, which served for Orient Line and P&O from 1959 until 1986.

DESCRIPTION -- From the P&O Line vessel the Victoria this is a pair of boxes of matches which are unused and show on them a picture of the ship and name.

HISTORY -- The ship was built in the UK, sadly a thing of the past, by JOHN BROWN at Clydebank in 1966 to Swedish America Line as the beautiful "KUNGSHOLM", she was bought by P &O in 1979 and after a major refit which destroyed her graceful lines renamed as the "SEA PRINCESS", she was used at the UK, Australian and USA markets where she was given PRINCESS CRUISES colours until eventually returned to P & O and renamed "VICTORIA" in 1998.

DESCRIPTION -- As used on board milk jug from the P&O shipping line which is dated from the 1960's and is bottom marked P&O with the size being 3" (9cm) high.

CONDITION -- Very Good

HISTORY -- The P&O Line first introduced passenger services in 1844, with a leisure cruise departing from Southampton to the Mediterranean. These voyages were the first of their kind and the forerunner of modern cruise holidays. The company later introduced round trips to destinations such as Alexandria and Constantinople and underwent rapid expansion in the later half of the 19th century, with its ships becoming larger and more luxurious.

DESCRIPTION -- From the original P&O vessel The Oriana an as used on board dining side plate which is dated circa 1960's and shows the traditional diamond pattern around its edge. The item is a Chinacraft Royal Porcelain plate designed by Queensbury Hunt for the Oriana and the size is 6" (16cm) wide (click on the picture to see to marking on the reverse of the item)

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- The first Oriana was built in 1960 by Vickers-Armstrong's, Barrow. Ordered by, and registered to the Orient Steam Navigation Co, she was delivered to P&O Orient Lines with the distinctive Orient Line corn-coloured hull. She served on the route to Australia from Southampton (unlike earlier Orient Liners which sailed from London). In 1962 she collided with the carrier USS Kearsarge between San Francisco and Los Angeles in fog. Her hull was repainted white in 1965, when she was transferred to full P&O registry

DESCRIPTION -- Great collection of items from the P&O vessel the SS Himalaya which contains a superb set of 5 B/W postcards showing views of the ship, and a ships cruise log and unused headed writing paper and all are from the 1960's.  All of the items are in a great condition and original from this famous vessel (click on the pictures for a closer look).

CONDITION -- Very Good

HISTORY -- The SS Himalaya was built at Barrow-in-Furness by Vickers Armstrong and launched 5 October 1948. She began her service on the Tilbury-Bombay-Australia route in 1949 following her departure from the local shipbuilding yard in the August. During her commission Himalaya underwent a number of improvements the first of which was, although controversial at the time, a funnel cowl to keep the liner's decks clear of debris without interference to the boilers.

DESCRIPTION -- Original and very early 'Certificate of Discharge' from the old P&O vessel 'Malta' which is dated March 1897 and for a seaman by the name of G. Paterson aged 42. It is in a very good condition and a rare find with the size being 16" x 20". (click on the picture for a close up view).

CONDITION -- Very Good

HISTORY -- In an effort to check desertion the first experiments in legally sanctioned discharge certificates are mentioned in legislation of 1729. 'Masters of vessels proceeding to parts beyond the seas were then required to enter into Agreements in writing with their seamen and it was provided that a seaman should forfeit a month's pay if he left his ship before he had a "discharge in writing from the Master"....'. However, there was no requirement for masters to issue written discharges until 1795, but only for those involved in the West Indies trade.

The company was headquartered in London, in the United Kingdom; it was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index
