MARITIME POSTCARD COLLECTION
DIFFERENT CRUISE LINES AND SHIPPING COMPANIES
DESCRIPTION -- Unused B/W postcard of the Royal Mail Line vessel the Highland Patriot which is in an excellent condition.

CONDITION -- Excellent
HISTORY -- Higland Patriot MV was a British Motor Cargo Vessel of 14,172 tons built in 1932 by Harland & Wolff Ltd, Belfast and owned by Royal Main Lines LTD. On the 1st October 1940 when on route from Buenos Aires for Glasgow carrying 5,700 tons refrigerated and general cargo she was torpedoed by German submarine U-38 and sunk. 3 crew lost from a total crew 143.

DESCRIPTION -- Used and great condition B/W postcard of the Elder Dempster Line vessel the TMS Adda which is dated as per postmark.

CONDITION -- Very Good
HISTORY -- Elder Dempster Shipping Limited was formed in 1899. Among their ships were the liner SS Monterey and the steamer SS Montezuma, which in early 1900 were both chartered as transport ships for British troops destined for South Africa during the Second Boer War.

CONDITION -- Excellent
HISTORY -- RMS Homeric, originally launched as Columbus, was built for Norddeutscher Lloyd and launched in 1913 at the F. Schichau yard in Danzig. Columbus was ceded to Great Britain in 1919 as part of German war reparations. She was sold to White Star Line in 1920, which named her Homeric. Her sister ship Hindenburg retained her German ownership and was re-named Columbus. Homeric was operated by White Star from 1922 to 1935.

DESCRIPTION -- Early B/W postcard of the Union Castle Line vessel The Sterling Castle and it is in a good condition although written on the back from postage and protected in a plastic wallet.

CONDITION -- Good
HISTORY -- The Royal Mail Motor Vessel (RMMV) Stirling Castle was an ocean-going liner owned by the Union Castle Mail Steam Ship Co. Ltd and named after the well known Scottish castle. Built by Harland & Wolff of Belfast in 1935, the RMMV Stirling Castle left Southampton on the 7th February 1936 for her maiden voyage to Cape Town in South Africa. One of the Union Castle's largest ships at 25,554 tons she could carry up to 700 passengers plus crew and a substantial cargo as well as the Royal Mail post.

DESCRIPTION -- Original B/W postcard of the old vessel the RMS Bruges and the item is in a great condition and an early example.

CONDITION -- Excellent
HISTORY -- The ship was built by John Brown of Clydebank for the Great Eastern Railway as one of a contract for two new steamers and launched on 20 March 1920. The vessel was placed on the Harwich to Antwerp route. In 1923 she was acquired by the London and North Eastern Railway. She was requisitioned during World War II as a troop transport ship and bombed and damaged on 11 June 1940 at Le Havre by Luftwaffe aircraft. She was beached to prevent her from sinking.

DESCRIPTION -- Postcard from the famous old liner the Canberra which is unused and is in a mint condition.

CONDITION -- Excellent
HISTORY -- The SS Canberra was an ocean liner, which later operated on cruises, in the P&O fleet from 1961 to 1997. She was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland at a cost of 17,000,000. The ship was named on 17 March 1958, after the federal capital of Australia, Canberra. She was launched on 16 March 1960, sponsored by Dame Pattie Menzies, GBE, wife of the then Prime Minister of Australia, Robert Menzies. She entered service in May 1961, and took her maiden voyage starting in June. During the 1982 Falklands War, she served as a troop ship.

CONDITION -- Excellent
HISTORY -- The QE2 was designed for the transatlantic service from her home port of Southampton, UK to New York, United States and was named after the earlier Cunard liner RMS Queen Elizabeth. She served as the flagship of the line from 1969 until succeeded by RMS Queen Mary 2 in 2004.

CONDITION -- Excellent
HISTORY -- The TSS Tuscania was built for Anchor Lines by Fairfield Shipping in 1921, weighed 16,991 tons and featured six turbine engines capable of 16 knots. Cunard chartered the ship between 1926 and 1931. It was then sold to Greek Line in 1939 and was rechristened Nea Hellas, becoming a troop ship during World War Two, and ferrying post-war immigrants to New York. In 1955, it served as the TSS New York until 1961 when she was sent to Japan to be scrapped.
